As proud sponsor of Enactus South Africa for over a decade, Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, pledged their continued support to our organisation in addressing poverty alleviation and job creation in local communities around the country through this Special Competition which was initiated in 2007.

Harmony challenged Enactus teams across the country to intervene and assist their communities by partnering with their local municipalities to tackle priority LED challenges. With Enactus’ purpose of enabling progress through entrepreneurial action, Enactus teams took advantage of this opportunity and identified key projects through either a Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) or an Industry focus to fast track local social economic development within communities. The top six teams where selected by a special adjudicating team of independent judges to demonstrate how they build economic competitiveness of a local area to improve it’s economic future and the quality of life. The following 5 teams have advanced to the Final Round of this special competition tomorrow, Thursday 20th June 2019 at KPMG Crescent, 85 Empire Road, Parktown, Johannesburg where they will present their impact so far:

• Central University of Technology (CUT) – Project Business Hive
• Central University of Technology (CUT) – Project Hope
• Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) – Ukukhanya Project
• Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) – Project Lookout Hill
• University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) – Project Sack Space
• University of Mpumalanga (UMP) – Project Hatching Hope

Harmony Executives will assess and judge the team’s 12-minute presentations. In addition, there will be 5 minutes allocated for a Q&A session. The winners will be announced on the 9th of July.
Harmony believes in investing in future leaders who have the power to enact sustainable change. They are committed to advancing entrepreneurial action, championing innovation and improving lives, communities and the world.

According to Mashego Mashego, Executive Director of Harmony, Local Economic Development (LED) is important as it holds the keys to a brighter future for all the inhabitants of the country. It is a process by which public, business and non-governmental sector partners work collectively to create better conditions for economic growth and employment generation.
