ENTREPRENEURIAL UNIVERSITY TEAMS TO COMPETE IN 2019 ENACTUS SOUTH AFRICA NATIONAL COMPETITION

On 8th – 9th July 2019, over 20 Enactus teams from across South Africa will participate in the Enactus South Africa National Competition, to be held at Sandton Convention Centre, Maude Street, Johannesburg. The anchor sponsors of this Competition are Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited and Barloworld Limited.

This platform offers the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders to showcase how they have used innovation and business principles to improve the world. The teams of university students come together to present their efforts to create meaningful social impact and based on the quality of their entrepreneurial projects to change the standard of living and quality of live of marginalized communities. One team will be awarded the title of National Champion, and will advance to the Enactus World Cup 2019 to be hosted in Silicon Valley (San Jose), California, USA from 16th to 18th September.

According to Letitia de Wet, Chief Executive Officer and Country Director for Enactus South Africa, “Enactus has proven that it is possible to transform lives and enable progress through entrepreneurial action. Like in business, I believe that competition in the social sector encourages innovation and reward results. This year business, student and academic leaders from across the country will gather again to witness how entrepreneurial action and shared innovation is transforming lives. This experience not only transforms the lives of the communities, but it helps our students develop the kind of talent and perspective that is essential in an ever more complicated and complex world. Because, when we come together with our unique talents, passions and ideas, and a common goal for the greater good, we all benefit!”

This program offers an opportunity for our students to grow, to give back to the community, to make a difference in the world in which we live, and to participate in competition to benchmark their work against their peers. “For me, Enactus represents the future – a better future forged by these young leaders with a head for business and a heart for the world that are converging on the 8th -9th July to share their innovative ideas and accomplishments with the business leaders. I have confidence that we all have a significant role to play to effect positive change by capacitating our communities, to protect and improve our shared and fragile environment, and to provide an entrepreneurial means for individuals to financially support themselves and be able to help others. ” says former President SSA & Automotive Europe, India, Middle East, Africa (EIMEA) and Enactus South Africa Board Chairman and Executive Coach, Jurie Welman.

The Opening Rounds of competition will take place on Monday, 8th July, where 16 teams will be up against each other in the four opening round leagues sponsored by AIG South Africa Limited, Nedbank, Rich Products Corporation Africa and CHEP South Africa (Pty) Ltd. The top two teams from each of the opening round leagues will advance to the Semi-final Rounds sponsored by AIG South Africa Limited, CHEP South Africa (Pty) Ltd, Nedbank and Unilever. This will take place in the morning of Tuesday 9th July. The top two teams from each of the semi-final round leagues will then proceed to the final round for the national champion title in the afternoon of Tuesday, 9th July. The national champion team will advance to the 2019 Enactus World Cup where they will represent our country and compete against 36 countries for the world champion title.

The topic on Tuesday 9th July will focus on Scaling inclusive Innovation across the African Continent and the 2019 Enactus ICT Challenge. Panelists include:

Enactus Background:

From April-July, Enactus has been hosting its National Events around the world in 37 countries. These dynamic, energetic events bring together student, academic and business leaders from the Enactus network for an opportunity to engage, collaborate and learn from one another. Over 1,000 delegates are expected to attend this year’s competition. This will be made up of at least 800+ student representatives from 20+ universities, of which 16 teams will compete in the Championship, and 9 in the Ideation Challenge. Over 150 academics and alumni will attend as observers, with 120+ leading business executives that will serve as adjudicators of the competition.

Last year, Enactus students around the world dedicated more than 7.3 million service hours creating and implementing over 3,800 projects that directly improved more than 1.3 million lives. These experiences not only transform the lives of the people the projects serve, but also help the students develop the kind of talent and perspective essential to leadership that sees challenges facing people and planet as opportunities to improve the world.

Enactus South Africa was founded in 2001. The organization has experienced great impact in the communities across the country; with 27 active teams and 2 201 active students that dedicating 621, 752 volunteering hours in projects during 2018.
